But there are 2 new environmental trends, falling water tables and rising temperatures. These are trends that the worlds farmers have not had to deal with before but as the worlds demand for food has tripled over the last half century the demand for irrigation water has also tripled and in many parts of the world that has led to the over-pumping of aquifers. Half of the worlds people now live in countries where water tables are falling and wells are going dry and these countries include China, India and the United States.

In fact, one of the most dangerous things. Of course, there we are in Iraq trying to control oil and gas, and the Chinese are looking towards the whole Caspian region as a source of petroleum for them because their petroleum situation is getting really bad, so bad that secondary recovery operations—that is, trying to flush the last oil out of oil wells—is using so much water in some areas that farms are going short of water. So a lot of people think that China will start moving in the same directions that we’re moving to try and control fossil fuels.

"One of the major problems facing the world today of course is potential climate change because of the accumulation of green house gasses. This implies that the so called carbon sink function of ecosystems has been filled and indeed is overflowing. So one of the components of our ecological footprint calculations initially was to determine what would the carbon sink area need; how much dedicated carbon sink forest or agriculture land would you need in order to assimilate the current output of carbon dioxide originating from fossil fuel." - Dr. William Rees

What is hard to consider is that it is technology that is the problem. Because we have reached in fisheries, everywhere really, the stage where we have too much fishing effort. That is, we are capable of catching anything that moves, anyplace, anytime, if we want to. In fact, we have so much effort that they step on each other’s toes all the time so we should reduce that effort so that the biomass can be rebuilt. That is, every time we make our boats more effective, more efficient, we make the problem worse.

You look at the rickety vessel and say to yourself, "My God, this thing is going to sink any second!"

Miraculously, seconds go by and it is still afloat. You look around to see who's in charge. The only people you can find who appear to have any authority are some pompous-looking characters operating a gambling casino in the middle of the raft.
